On Friday 6th January 2017 it was the day to tackle the dreaded loose clapper on the 5th bell. Its castellated nut had already defied WD40 and small spanners. A bellhanger had been called upon, and the intrepid tower captain was there to assist. More WD40 was applied before the mighty jaws of Stillson wrenches were applied to the nut on the outside and the clapper shaft on the inside. Those of a delicate disposition should stop reading now, as language was also expended! At last, the nut yielded and the clapper removed in triumph. New leather washers were fitted and copper grease applied before re-attaching the nut and tightening. All’s well again and the clapper has ceased to turn in its mounting. Thanks to Malcolm for his expertise.
